About DHS Library :

DHS Library houses a multitude of books, reference materials, magazines, newspapers, & videos. Online searching is available on thirty-one networked computers. We currently have access to high quality databases which include Encyclopedia Britannica Online, EBSCO, Novelist Plus, African American Studies Center, Career Cruising and more. The library has a newly added career center/leisure reading area. A scanner and printers are available for a fee.

Policies :

Library Passes
Students coming to the library during the day must have an "Official Library Pass." These passes have been emailed to all teachers and should be saved on the teachers' computers, so that they have instant access and can print at their convenience. We Do Not accept handwritten passes or agendas. If for some reason a teacher does not have access to a pass, the teacher must call the library (ext. 3600) and talk to an adult staff member before sending a student.

Book Check-Out
Students may check out 1 to 3 books (depending on grade level) at a time for 3 weeks. Each book may be renewed 1 time.

Fines
Students are charged for overdue books. Fines are .10 cents per day per book. Students with lost or damaged books will be charged a replacement fee and will not be allowed to check out other materials until their fines have been cleared.

Printing
Black and white computer printouts are .10 cents per page and color prints are .25 cents per page.

Print & Video Resources :

Magazines
We currently subscribe to approximately 40 various titles. Some of these magazines are professional, but most are high interest reading. The magazines are housed in the Career Corner. Due to high demand, the magazines must remain in the library. See Kim Wigfall for more information.

Magazine List 2010-2011

Videos
We currently house approximately 600+ videos. Most of these videos may be checked out by teachers only. We have a section of career & college videos that may be checked out by students during the day and viewed in the library. A career & college video will have CC in the call number. See
Ritch Furlow for more information.

Newspapers
We subscribe to the Dallas Morning News. The current copy must remain in the library. However, we keep back issues that may be used outside the library. See
Kim Wigfall for more information.

Meet the Staff :

DHS Library is staffed with 2 full-time librarians as well as 2 full time assistants.

Julie Daehnert:

Julie Daehnert is a certified teacher with a Bachelors of Science degree from Howard Payne University in English/Elementary Education/Early Childhood Education. She spent 12 years as a classroom teacher before earning her Learning Resource Endorsement and moving into the library. She is your contact to schedule class visits and request new materials. She is loving her "promotion" to the secondary level and working with the Fabulous Freshman Campus. This is her 25th year in education and her 8th in DeSoto.
